Dérive
Getting back to you through the art and process of shooting analog
”This is an invitation to make a layered self-portrait: via the city, the surroundings, and ultimately... through yourself. Not a single image, but a journey. Starting big, you go small, from city to self... a journey where photography, film and poetry strengthen one another”

Get Back to You
In this age where our lives are determined by speed, screens and continuous output, this workshop series offers a different route: slowing down, presence and play.
Our principle is the Dérive, the aimless wandering, combined with analog photography and film to discover new ways of seeing.
Whether visual artist, writer, musician or performer, this method is nurturing for all disciplines.
The impact is twofold:
For you, the human: slowing down, becoming present and making room for coincidence and play. This practice is essential for your mental & spiritual health.
For you, the creator: develop new perspectives, create within boundaries and collect material that serves as a mirror to your own work.
The result of this process is not a fixed story but a poetic map of your layered existence.

What To Expect
This is not a technical course but an exercise in being present, a means to discover yourself and your surroundings. Of course, you will learn how to develop your negatives and you will make a film using a Super8 camera using the same approach you used to take your photos.
While there is a certain amount of technical knowledge necessary, the emphasis of this course is the experience: the moment itself, the choices made and the traces you leave behind.
We are looking for participants who have taken photos with an analog camera, and who, preferably, have access to an analog camera, whatever the type.
A basic knowledge is important but this course is quite accessible, so if you are in doubt about whether this course is for you,, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

Herbert Alfonso
Herbert is a true multidisciplinary artist who's been a tour photographer, graphic designer and videographer (this means digital). In 2016 he released his documentary "Typhoon: Blues & Blessings" with BNN/VARA.
He has a real soft spot for analogue photography & filmmaking - the slowing down, thinking about what you really want to capture because you have a limited amount of shots you can take, setting up the perfect framing, all of that. The focus, thus, of the program in Zwolle is all about the love & art of analogue and he's just the guy to teach it!
